The county is approximately 2,358 square miles with 458,000 acres in cropland and 1,420,000 acres in rangeland. Primary crops grown in the county are dryland wheat and pulse crops with irrigated crops including corn, alfalfa, and sugar beets. Livestock enterprises are mainly cow/calf along with few sheep operations and some cattle feeding. The Dawson County 4-H program features 73 youth members, 23 leaders, and 5 active clubs. The population of Dawson County is approximately 8680 including Glendive, the county seat, which has a population of approximately 5100 with an additional 2000 people living just outside the city limits. Other towns in the county include Richey, Bloomfield and Lindsay. K-12 Education is available in Glendive and Richey, and Glendive is home to Dawson Community College. K - 8 is available in Lindsay and Bloomfield and Deer Creek elementary offers K - 6. The Glendive Medical Center offers a wide array of medical services. The area offers a variety of recreational opportunities including hunting, fishing, boating, and paddlefishing in the spring. Makoshika State Park, a badlands scenic area, is only minutes away from downtown Glendive. The main emphases of the Dawson County Extension Agent position will be in the areas of Agriculture and 4-H. The agent also has secondary responsibilities in the areas of community development and family and consumer science. The office also has a full time administrative assistant. Extension work at MSU is defined as, the creation of partnerships, programs, and plans through Extension, or other community-based research, that leverage the knowledge and resources of the university and the public/private sector to enhance learning, discovery, and engagement; educate and engage citizens; strengthen communities; address locally identified issues and problems; apply and disseminate knowledge; and contribute to the public good. We seek individuals who work professionally and effectively with diverse individuals, possess effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to contribute positively to the academic success of the students and the mission of Montana State University. Duties and Responsibilities - Plan, implement and evaluate educational programs in agriculture, including dryland and irrigated crop production, livestock production, farm and ranch financial management, noxious weed management, range management, pest management, and pesticide training. - Provide support, including leadership, planning and innovation to the 4-H youth development program. Coordinate the planning and delivery of leader education programs at the county level and in cooperation with neighboring agents at the regional level. - Provide programming and support as necessary in the areas of family and consumer sciences and community development. - Plan, implement, and evaluate educational programs in horticulture and home pest management. - Network closely with policy makers, producer groups, government agencies and others in order to assess needs and guide local program priorities. - Serve as an ex-officio member of various agency and community committees relating to agriculture, youth development, and community development. - Cooperate with other Extension staff, government agencies, and civic groups in implementing, maintaining, and evaluating a balanced interdisciplinary Extension program. - Involve local officials and community citizens in determining needs, identifying major issues, and assisting in presenting/facilitating programs in various communities in Dawson County. - Utilize all available media sources, including electronic mail, the Internet, and other advancing technologies, to communicate with MSU Extension staff and others, and to disseminate information to county clientele. - Must possess or be able to obtain a Government Pesticide Applicator's License and a Montana driver's license, or have reliable means of transportation. - Comply with all Extension federal, state, university, and county reporting requirements. - Assure compliance with civil rights and affirmative action policies. - Position requires frequent night and weekend work, extensive reading, frequent travel throughout the county, occasional travel throughout the state of Montana, and travel to and from programs with adult and youth participants. Position also requires using a variety of teaching methods, and handling and operating a variety of demonstration and educational equipment. Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills - Bachelor's Degree. - At least one degree or relevant work experience in agronomy, farm management, beef production, youth development or other related field. - Demonstrated experience to lead groups, plan, implement, facilitate, teach, and evaluate educational programs. - Demonstrated experience to manage multiple and varied tasks and to accept and delegate responsibilities. - Computer literacy as demonstrated by evidence of computer use in program development, delivery and/or management. - Demonstrated experience helping diverse groups and individuals accomplish common goals. Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills - Masters Degree in a related field. - Knowledge or experience in dryland crops production, livestock production, farm management, and weed and pest management. - Knowledge or experience in 4-H or other youth related programs - Facilitation and mediation experience or training. - Training and/or experience in budget development and management. The Successful Candidate Will - Excellent human relation skills - A high level of professionalism - The ability to work effectively with other staff members - Evidence of good judgment - Flexibility and innovativeness in order to respond to the changing needs of people in Dawson County - Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. - Ability to provide effective leadership to Extension programming. - Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and varied tasks and to accept and delegate responsibilities - Familiarity with multi-cultural and different socioeconomic audiences, an interest in working with people from diverse backgrounds, and a commitment to the principles of diversity. Position Special Requirements/Additional Information This position, if filled at the Master's degree level, will be tenure-track. A successful candidate without a Master's degree will be required to complete their Master's degree, in a program area relevant to their Extension position, within six (6) years of their start date. Failure to do so may result in termination. Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver's license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points), or have other reliable means of transportation. Must have access to a vehicle to use for work (mileage will be reimbursed), and have minimum vehicle liability insurance. Do NOT send a copy of the driver's license.
