This is an academic year (nine month) tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences at Montana State University. The appointment will be 60% Research, 30% Teaching, and 10% Service funded by the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station and the College of Agriculture. This position will require close working relationships with faculty in the Department, the College, other departments on the MSU campus (including the cross college Sustainable Food and BioEnergy Systems degree program), other Land Grant Universities, Experiment Station Livestock operations team, and Montana Sheep Producers. Duties and Responsibilities The successful candidate will be expected to develop a competitive research program to establish a nationally competitive, independently funded research program in sheep production, target grazing and integrated crop livestock systems. The successful candidate will teach a senior level Sheep and Wool Management class, a sophomore level course on Livestock in Sustainable Systems and develop an alternate year graduate course in an area of the successful candidate's expertise. He/she will be expected to advise undergraduates in Animal and Range Sciences, mentor graduate and undergraduate research students, and will also be responsible for providing service as applicable to the department, college, university, and scientific community. The successful candidate will also be expected to be involved in decision making process relative to the management of the Experiment Station's sheep herd. Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills - An earned Ph.D. in Animal Science or related field at the time of hire, with an emphasis in sheep nutrition, physiology, or genetics. - Potential to establish (for candidates at the Assistant Professor level), or evidence of having established (required of candidates at the Associate Professor level), an externally funded, competitive, and integrated/multi-disciplinary research program. - Demonstrated ability to conduct and publish high quality and original research, as indicated by publication in peer-reviewed journals. - Demonstrated or potential for excellence in undergraduate and graduate instruction and mentoring. Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills - Post-doctoral experience or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. - Experience with Soils, Agro-ecology, Cropping and Grazing systems, Ecology or other aspects of farming systems/plant-soil ecology. - A research program that complements and expands on current multidisciplinary research programs. - Experience teaching in the field of Animal Science. The Program The Department The Department of Animal and Range Sciences is the largest department in the College of Agriculture and our student numbers are growing. In addition to MS and PhD programs, we offer Bachelor of Science degrees in Animal Science (options include Livestock Management and Industry, Science, and Equine Science) and Natural Resources and Rangeland Ecology (options include Rangeland Ecology and Management and Wildlife Ecology and Management). The department also offers the Sustainable Livestock Production Option in the interdisciplinary degree: Sustainable Food and Bioenergy Systems. We are a fully integrated department serving all three of the land grant missions of teaching, research, and extension. In addition, our program incorporates livestock operations into our teaching, research, and extension program. The College As the foundational component of Montana's land grant university at Montana State University, the College of Agriculture (COA) and the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station (MAES) provide instruction in dynamic degree programs and conduct research relevant to the challenges in Montana's agricultural and natural resource communities. We create opportunities for students, staff and faculty to excel through hands-on learning, to serve through campus and community engagement, to explore unique solutions to distinct and interesting questions and to connect Montanans with the global community through research discoveries and outreach. The COA offers eleven baccalaureate, nine masters, and four doctoral degree programs from five departments and one division. MAES conducts research through the Department of Research Centers (Corvallis, Conrad, Creston, Havre, Huntley, Moccasin, Sidney), in collaboration with other academic departments, near Bozeman, and throughout Montana.
