Responsible for overseeing Montana State University's Alpine Ski program in Bozeman, Montana. Responsibilities include: student-athlete welfare, academic integrity, public relations, sport-specific fund raising, rules compliance, and planning and implementation of practices and competition. The Head Alpine Ski Coach reports directly to the Sr. Associate Athletic Director

Duties and Responsibilities

Promote the philosophy and objectives of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, including adhering to all Departmental, University, RMISA, Big Sky Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations. Cooperate with all coaches and administrative staff within the intercollegiate athletics programs to enhance overall departmental operations. Recruitment of student-athletes, specifically with on- and off-campus visits of prospective student-athletes. Coach student-athletes including evaluating their performance in practices and competition and providing leadership and instruction in areas of deficiencies, as required. Counsel team members in academic, disciplinary, and personal matters in conjunction with the Academic coordinator, Sport Administrator and other university administrators to resolve problems. Record athlete data in Excel for athlete tracking purposes Athletic Equipment Management and inventory Coordinate with ski equipment companies and place athlete orders Organize boot fitting and canting with local ski shop Ensure compliance with all equipment regulations Oversee tuning and waxing including grinding edges as needed Execute specific fundraising tasks Execute building projects (ski racks, box jump boxes, displays) Oversee vehicle maintenance Participate in public relations activities, as requested, including granting interviews with newspapers, radio and TV media, attending press conferences, and making public appearances.

Consult with assigned sports information staff regarding competitions and media relations. Represent the Department at professional, civic, charitable, and alumni events, as requested. Perform all other duties or responsibilities as assigned by the sport administrator, and/or the Director of Athletics.

Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience Record of successful coaching or competing in a College Alpine ski program. Demonstrated success in recruiting prospective student-athletes.

Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Master's degree. Experience interacting with a variety of constituents (i.e., the public, boosters, fans, administration, faculty, student-athletes, recruits, parents). Record of successful Alpine Ski coaching experience in NCAA Division I. Knowledge of and commitment to BSC and NCAA Division I rules, specifically regarding recruiting and academics. Demonstrated ability in: recruiting prospective student-athletes, management of academic programs, dryland & on-snow coaching, counseling student-athletes, and monitoring for NCAA Division I compliance. Experience developing and motivating student-athletes for athletic and academic success, while protecting academic integrity. Experience promoting student-athlete welfare (health and safety issues).

The Successful Candidate Will

Have excellent communication skills, be a positive motivator, have demonstrated leadership and organizational abilities, and be able to clearly articulate a coherent plan and vision to build and enhance the MSU Alpine Ski program. Have impeccable integrity with a strong commitment to NCAA, BSC, RMISA and MSU regulations. Have ability to make sound judgments, and be able to relate to student-athletes, faculty, staff and boosters.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

Coaching Alpine Skiing demands expertise in a variety of areas including year-round training program development, competing/operating in adverse weather conditions, and hands on knowledge of ski and equipment preparation based on changing weather conditions. Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver's license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points). Do NOT send a copy of the driver's license.

Physical Demands

This position requires the ability to: traverse snow in steep terrain for extended periods of time with exposure to inclement weather conditions such as cold temperatures, wind, and snow. Ability to drive Atheltics Department vehicles safely to transport student-athletes to and from practice and competitions. Trips can range from 100 miles up to 500 miles.
