Primary-role advisors in MSU's Advising Commons Shared Services serve students in a variety of academic disciplines at MSU. This Advisor III position focuses on serving students and colleagues within Liberal Studies and the School of Music. As an Advising Commons advisor, the successful candidate will be a critical liaison to the Advising Commons team and the academic units that they serve. As an Advisor III, the successful candidate will lead and coordinate the advising functions within both areas.

Duties and Responsibilities

Manage or coordinate the advising and student success functions for Liberal Studies and the School of Music. Provide developmental academic advising both in-person and remote for all Liberal Studies students from prospective status through graduation, including three campus-based majors and minors and one distance-based major Provide developmental academic advising for early-degree students within the School of Music including all three Music majors and the Music minor Educate students about School of Music entry-level coursework Participate in scholarship committee work as appropriate Meet with students on academic probation/suspension and coach students through appeals processes and extraordinary requests Work with and help onboard a diverse range of students: straight-from-high school, non-traditional age, international, transfer, student athletes Represent advising focus areas to prospective students throughout the academic year and at MSU Fridays, Orientations, and recruiting events Serve as link between advising focus areas and Advising Commons director. Collaborate and work with faculty, department heads, and college leadership teams of assigned academic units Develop advising communication materials for all programs advised and distribute advising materials to advisees and colleagues Conduct graduation audits and review graduation applications for Liberal Studies students

Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Bachelor's degree in a relevant field with experience working with undergraduate college students in an academic or student support setting, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Experience working with academic curricula, degree requirements, policies and procedures in a higher education setting. Demonstrated knowledge of higher education offices and resources that support student success.

Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Master's degree in a relevant field. Experience working as an undergraduate academic advisor or student success coordinator. Experience working with enrollment and degree auditing software, such as DegreeWorks, CatCourse, Banner, MyInfo and/or relational database.

Possess strong written and oral communication skills. Possess the ability to troubleshoot problems and have candid conversations. Possess experience and awareness of how to manage and maintain confidential information. Have proven ability to work independently and in a team environment. Have the ability to represent both Advising Commons and Academic Units served in a professional and courteous manner. Actively pursue training and professional development opportunities. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations.
