The Housing Division at MSU, comprised of Residence Life and Family & Graduate Housing, offers a unique, on-campus living experience for students and their families as they focus on their academic success. Managing 11 active on-campus communities which are the home of up to 5,300 residents. The departmental mission includes provision of reasonably priced living environments which are clean, attractive, well-maintained, comfortable, and include safety features; ensures the orderly and effective administration of the program through efficient management; and provides a learning environment and related co-curricular programs which promote maturity and academic success. Programs and services are directed toward the development of individuals' awareness within a community and their responsibilities to themselves and those around them. These programs and staff interventions are designed to promote student development and are grounded in human and student development theories.

Duties and Responsibilities Reporting to the Associate Director, the Area Coordinator provides overall responsibility for the supervision, training and evaluation of live-in staff members (Community Directors, Assistant Resident Directors, and Resident Advisors/Community Assistants), other related student staff, and desk staff; works with custodial and maintenance supervisors in the promotion of positive facilities management; serves as a conduct officer and directs follow-up on students facing crisis situations; and provides leadership for the development and implementation of intentional and educational residential programming. Area Coordinators support year-round operations through selection and training of summer staff, staff training. Area Coordinator highlighted duties are:

Directly supervises, evaluates and trains 3 to 4 Community Directors in daily operations of the residence life program affecting approximately 1,700 residents. Oversees the daily administrative operations of an area of 1,700 residents. Assists in the development and implementation of the Residential Curriculum. Serves as a conduct officer for conduct by upholding the student code of conduct, the residence life handbook rules and regulations, and the residence life housing agreement. Responds to parent/family member concerns while maintaining student confidentiality. Participates in the rotating on call system with the department leadership, responding to emergencies on evenings and weekends, and during periods when the university is closed. Supervises staff in the implementation of the intentional educational residential programming in our residence halls; paying special attention to the populations within that area. Provides leadership for the development and implementation of area and hall educational plans, with input provided by the area team and Leadership Team. Oversees the allocated budget for programming in assigned halls. Working collaboratively with maintenance and building services teams, helps to prioritize maintenance work orders based upon area needs and operating priorities. Actively participates as part of the team while performing other duties in support of the department's mission.

Area Coordinators will be responsible for one of the following areas: (1) Departmental Student Staff Recruitment, Selection, and Training; and Diversity; or (2) Community Standards and Student Welfare.

Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Master's degree plus two years of progressively responsible experience in a residential housing system or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

Demonstrated supervision experience of various levels of staff (i.e. paraprofessional, graduate, etc.). Excellent administrative skills, including an ability to effectively manage multiple priorities. Demonstrated success implementing programs that promote student retention. Experience adjudicating student conduct cases and successful case management. Experience with crisis management, problem solving, making complex decisions, and engaging in difficult conversations. Experience working with diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Master's Degree in Student Affairs/Personnel, Education, Business, or a related field Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships. . Experience with analyzing and resolving conflict, team building, group dynamics. Experience utilizing case management software. Demonstrated competence in one or more of the following areas: (1) Departmental Student Staff Recruitment, Selection, and Training; and Diversity, (2) Community Standards & Student Welfare. Preferably Community Standards & Student Welfare for this posted position.

Be sensitive to the needs of residents and have an extensive knowledge of customer service. Demonstrate expertise in exercising good judgment and making consistent decisions. Exhibit effective interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate employees to perform at and sustain a high level of quality. Be self-motivated, takes initiative and works independently. Effectively work in a fast-paced, team oriented environment. Exhibit logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions. Meet timelines and maintain accurate administrative documentation. Exhibit proficient computer expertise. Ability to critically think and resolve problems during emergency and crisis response. And represent the department in a courteous and professional manner.

This position is a full-time, 12 month, live-on position. A furnished apartment is provided, and a board plan is provided when the food service is open for residential service. Position is eligible for full classified employee benefit package and a tuition waiver up to 6 credits per semester. Occasional travel for professional development. Serves on the Housing On-Call Team 365 days a year. Will occasionally work evenings, weekends, long hours, and holidays as needed and consecutive days without breaks during peak times.

Physical Demands

Normal office environment Actively access areas of the facilities in due course of daily duties or as emergent situations arise. Occasionally move packages and boxes of up to 30lbs.
