Job Title: Registered Respiratory Therapist Profession: Cardiopulmonary Specialty: Respiratory Therapy Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Shift Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: Minimum of 2 years License: Required Licensure as a Registered Respiratory Therapist Certifications: Registered Respiratory Therapist Certification (NBRC), American Heart Association BLS, American Heart Association ACLS within 3 months of hire, American Heart Association PALS within 3 months of hire, Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within 3 months of hire Must-Have: Certification in Neonatal-Pediatric Specialist (NBRC-NPS) and/or Adult Critical Care Specialist (NBRC-ACCS) preferred Description: The Registered Respiratory Therapist will administer respiratory care to neonate, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients with cardiopulmonary system deficiencies and abnormalities. This role includes training and acting as a resource for the respiratory department. Employees must have on-time completion of all required education assigned per healthcare requirements and organizational policy. Maintains knowledge of various methods of oxygen delivery, including necessary equipment. Remains alert and assesses possible side effects to oxygen delivery. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of differences in technique and treatment modalities for patients of varying ages, including pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients. Administers respiratory therapy treatments and nebulized medications, understanding the purpose and possible side effects associated with each. Sets up and monitors mechanical ventilators and manages associated critical care duties. Performs arterial punctures to obtain arterial blood samples for blood gas analysis and understands potential complications and contraindications associated with the procedure. Follows departmental equipment sterilization procedures. Documents all pertinent data on the patient’s medical record following completion of any service. Maintains thorough knowledge of electronic health records, departmental forms, flow charts, logbooks, and their proper usage. Formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs of a patient and evaluates the effectiveness of learning. Coordinates and directs patient care to ensure patient needs are met and that organizational policy is followed. Ability to assess patient needs and tolerance of treatment and reassess response to treatment. Works collaboratively with other departments and disciplines to coordinate patient care. Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure safe and efficient functioning. Participates in performance improvement activities and quality improvement teams regarding departmental concerns and workflow. Attends education in-service programs to maintain professional competency. Pursues professional development opportunities through organizations and continuing education. Attends departmental meetings and utilizes communication tools to stay informed of department and organizational issues and updates. Performs additional duties as assigned by the department manager. Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are necessary. Advanced math skills and the ability to analyze, interpret, and present complex data are essential. Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks in a busy environment. Exercises tact, discretion, sensitivity, and maintains confidentiality. Proficiency in computer applications, electronic medical records, and standard office equipment is required. Lifting, walking, and standing for extended periods are physical requirements of the job. The position may involve exposure to bloodborne pathogens and various healthcare substances. Emotional resilience is necessary for dealing with distressed patients or challenging family interactions.
