Job Description:

Must possess the skills and abilities to engage in the nursing process including but not limited to the assessment, nursing analysis, planning, nursing intervention and evaluation in the promotion and maintenance of the patient's health across the continuum of life. Must have the skills needed to supervise and delegate appropriate functions to subordinate personnel. Must have the skills/abilities to evaluate and ensure that the medical plan of care is carried out. Must have the educational, physical and mental capabilities to perform procedures common to their nursing unit.Must complete department specific competency validation checklists within four (4) month probationary period or as designated per topic.If Lactation Consultant: Prenatal appointment opportunities to offer prenatal breastfeeding counseling, and to introduce and promote the OB services offered (lactation program, hearing screening, Lamaze Classes, follow-up, etc.)Teach the prenatal breastfeeding class. Daily rounds to evaluate and educate if needed each breastfeeding mother in the hospital after delivery, before discharge. Follow-up phone calls to each mother after discharge. Out-patient visits for lactation evaluation. Home visits optional. Make and accept lactation referrals from physicians and/or hospital.Breast pump dispensing and education for all mothers needing a pump.Lactation support for staff.Staff and physician education yearly or as needed.REQUIREMENTSEDUCATIONRequired:Current Montana Registered Nurse License Preferred:LICENSURE and CERTIFICATIONRequired:NRP Certification required within 6 months of hire Recertification of NRP required every 2 years during employment as per ANA guidelines FHM competency course (APS on-line course) or equivalent AWHONN approved course completed within 6 months of hire (not required if a Lactation RN) Recertification of FHM required every 2 years thereafter (not required if a Lactation RN) ACLS required with 1 year of hire (not required for Lactation RN)ACLS recertification is required every 2 years thereafter (not required for Lactation RN) BLS Certification through the American Heart Assocation as Health Care ProviderIf Lactation Consultant:Current certification in lactation consulting/counseling (CLC, IBCLC)Certification must be maintained and continuing education as requiredPreferred:EXPERIENCERequired:1 year Labor and Delivery Preferred:KNOWLEDGE OF, SKILLS IN, ABILITY TO, COMPLEXITY AND DIFFICULY:KNOWLEDGE OF:Personal Computers, hardware and basic software programs including e-mail, word processing, and spreadsheets.SKILLS IN:ABILITY TO:Refer to policy manual for specific instructions/guidelines.
