Under the direction of the Respiratory Therapy Manager and
according to Bozeman Health and department policies and procedures,
the Registered Respiratory Therapist NICU Lead is responsible for
all aspects of patient care within their designated service line.
The NICU Lead is also responsible for procedure development,
providing ongoing education, verification of staff clinical
competency for the newborn in the NICU working in cooperation with
the NICU Medical Director and Nursery Nurse Educator. Care for the
premature newborn, and pediatric populations serving as a resource
for this age specific
population.REQUIREMENTSEDUCATIONRequired:Graduate of an accredited
registered respiratory therapy program, or otherwise accredited RRT
through NBRC.Preferred:LICENSURE and
CERTIFICATIONRequired:Maintains current Montana Licensure as
Respiratory Therapist. NBRC RRT credential. Current CPR
certification Healthcare Provider. Current ACLS. certification -
New hires will be allowed up to 6 months for completion. Current
NRP. certification - New hires will be allowed until the next
available class up to 8 months for completion. Current PALS.
certification - New hires will be allowed up to 6 months for
experience of Level III or higher NICUPreferred:KNOWLEDGE OF,
SKILLS IN, ABILITY TO, COMPLEXITY AND DIFFICULY:KNOWLEDGE
OF:Personal computers, hardware and basic software programs
including e-mail, word processing, and spreadsheets. Physical
ability to deliver oxygen and respiratory treatments as prescribed.
Potential adverse reactions to oxygen and respiratory treatment
therapy.Diagnosis and management of common respiratory problems of
the newborn, including; RDS, TTN, pneumonia, MAS, PPHN, and
CLDSKILLS IN:Manual Dexterity to operate computer, effective
communication skills, legible writing, data collection and analysis
skills, and an ability to evaluate nonfunctioning equipment.
Delivering all aspects of respiratory therapy. Maintaining
airways.Communication and teaching; neonatal/pediatric airway
management (including ETT placement).ABILITY TO:Refer to policy
manual for specific instructions/guidelines. Follow established
policies and procedures. Adhere to the standards of the job
description and overall philosophy of Bozeman Deaconess Hospital.
Set-up and manage mechanical ventilators. Ability to sterilize
equipment. Perform advance life support measures relating to the
maintenance of airways. Understand and work around infectious
secretions. Perform arterial blood sampling. Effectively
communicate in speech and writing. Stay current with hospital email
communications. The therapist is responsible to read all
communications from the RT manager and supervisor as well as other
hospital communications. Collect objective data and reduce to note
format. Understand the use of flow sheets and log books. Assist
with CODE 99s and RRTs. Rotate shifts. Take and transcribe
physician orders. Maintain a responsible, friendly and professional
attitude toward the hospital and the department. CPAP/AUTOPAP set
up and mask fitting.CRU: Cooperative, Respectful, Unified: Create
and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and
positive attitude as well as a calm environment throughout the
department. Use time productively and triage treatments
appropriately. Clock in and out per RT dept. specific policy. Read
and understand all RT dept. specific and related policies and
protocols.COMPLEXITY AND DIFFICULTY:ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS25% Time
Spent - NICU procedure development, providing staff education,
verification of staff clinical competency related to newborn
respiratory care.20% Time Spent -Maintains knowledge of the various
methods of oxygen delivery, including the necessary equipment.
Remains alert, assesses possible side effects to oxygen delivery.
Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the differences in
technique and treatment modalities as performed on patients of
varying ages, including pediatric, adolescent and geriatric
patients. --- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of oxygen
concentrations and medication doses as they relate to patients of
varying ages, including pediatric, adolescent and geriatric
patients. 20% Time Spent - Administers respiratory therapy
treatments, and nebulized medications. Understands the purpose of
each and the possible side effects associated with each.Sets-up and
monitors mechanical ventilators and the associated critical care
duties required for such treatment. Performs arterial punctures to
obtain arterial blood samples for blood gas analysis, and
understands the possible complications and contraindications
associated with the procedure. Follows departmental equipment
sterilization procedures. Documents all pertinent data on the
patient's medical record following completion of any service.
Maintains a thorough knowledge of electronic health record,
departmental forms, flow charts, logbooks and their proper usage.
Formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs of a
patient and evaluates effectiveness of learning. Patient's family
is included in teaching as appropriate. Treats patients and their
families with respect and dignity. Coordinates and directs patient
care to ensure patient's needs are met and that hospital policy is
followed. Ability to assess patient, his/her need, and ability to
tolerate treatment and reassessment for response to treatment.20%
Time Spent - Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure that it
is functioning safely and efficiently. Participates in performance
improvement activities and CQI teams when discussion pertains to
department concerns, workflow and mission.10% Time Spent - Attends
education in-service programs to maintain professional competency.
Obtains appropriate hospital-specific education and training.5%
