The Research Engineer and Manager is responsible for operation and maintenance of the clean room laboratory and equipment, supervision of professional staff and student employees, providing user training including safety training and training for safe and effective use of process equipment, participating in microfabrication teaching in support of university courses, assisting with fabrication design and development of new processes in support of researchers, and tracking income and expenses to maintain a balanced operations account. Contract TypeLOA If other, please specify Recruitment TypeOpen Position Details General Statement The Montana Microfabrication Facility (MMF) is a cleanroom user facility at Montana State University, and is part of the Montana Nanotechnology Facility, a node of the NSF National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure program. The MMF supports course work in the College of Engineering and research of principle investigators across campus as well as external academic, government and industry users, through providing access and training to use facilities and instrumentation, mentorship of students, and consultation on process development. The Research Engineer and Manager will report to the facility director, Dr. David Dickensheets. Duties and Responsibilities - Oversee all aspects of operation of the MMF facility and the process equipment housed there - Supervise MMF professional staff and student employees - Ensure maintenance of the clean room, laboratory infrastructure, and processing equipment - Track income and expenses, keep user invoicing current, and maintain a balanced operations account - Maintain a user training program, to include safety training and training for safe and effective use of process equipment - Participate in microfabrication teaching in support of university courses and workshops - Provide laboratory informational outreach, to include a web page that allows prospective and existing users to gain critical information about access, training and operation of the tools in the clean room - Assist and advise users and principle investigators with technical aspects of laboratory use, including process development Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills - Bachelor of Science Degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience in Engineering, Physical Sciences or closely related field - Progressive experience working in a nanotechology user facility with both equipment and processing responsibilities. Demonstrated expertise in nanofabrication skills to include a subset of the following: - thin films deposition (sputter, evaporation, atomic layer deposition) - plasma etching - optical and ebeam lithography - wet processing - metrology. - Demonstrated management experience. Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills - M.S. or Ph.D. in nanotechnology-related area - Demonstrated experience with physical vapor deposition and maintaining PVD systems - Demonstrated experience in a management role in a user facility - Demonstrated expertise in instrument maintenance including familiarity with RF electronics, vacuum systems, and facility management software - Demonstrated experience training users and mentoring students The Successful Candidate Will - Demonstrated ability to mentor and train students in microfabrication techniques and facility maintenance - Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot processing equipment and effect repairs - Demonstrated ability to develop new processes for PVD, wet or dry etch, or lithography - Demonstrated ability to work supportively and creatively with people with a wide range of ability and training related to microfabrication and facility operation Position Special Requirements/Additional Information This job description should not be construed as an exhaustive statement of duties, responsibilities or requirements, but a general description of the job.
