Team Nutrition ( MTN ) was established in 1995 with funding from
the USDA through close collaboration with Montana Office of Public
Instruction. In collaboration with partners across the state, MTN
leverages evidence-based practices and policies to provide
training, resources, and support to K-12 schools that promote
engaging food-based education, foster positive food relationships,
and cultivate healthy school environments. MTN's vision is to
cultivate healthy Montana children and communities by shaping
lifelong positive food and physical activity habits. Montana Farm
to School is a collaboration between Montana Office of Public
Instruction, Montana Team Nutrition Program, Montana State
University, and other partners. The work for Montana Farm to School
is largely driven via the Montana Farm to School Leadership Team.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage and provide leadership for Montana Farm to School
portfolio of projects.
- Hire, supervise, and direct staff schedules to carry out
activities with the grant timelines and budget.
- Coordinate effective internal control process for managing
funds at Montana Office of Public Instruction, grant sponsors, and
at Montana State University.
- Manage grant budgets.
- Manage sub-grant and sub-contract award process, forms, and
payment system to school districts or to partners as needed. Ensure
that the sub-grants meet grant requirements. Monitor grant spending
and collect reports from sub-grant recipients to ensure funds are
spent correctly and prudently.
- Maintain a network of partners to collaborate with to implement
activities and achieve outcomes and maintain effective
communication with those key partners and grant sponsors.
- Participate in MSU Department and College activities to provide
mentoring to students via service-learning projects or working with
HHD interns, including the Montana Dietetic Internship Program;
and/or participate in committees, upon request.
- Facilitate statewide coalitions and teams, including but not
limited to the Montana Farm to School Leadership Team, as needed
per work plan or to ensure on going collaboration with
partners.
- Pursue, write, and submit grant applications as needed and
apply guidance received by funders/sponsors to management
practices.
- Complete and submit required reports to funder and/or
sponsor.
- Evaluate program and project effectiveness and impact.
- Develop and maintain project and communications materials.
- Oversee and manage communications platforms and strategies
including website, social media platforms, media, newsletters, etc.
Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
- Bachelor's Degree in nutrition, sustainable foods, or related
field and/or substantial knowledge and successful experience
managing grant-funded projects in same or similar fields.
- Substantial experience with USDA Child Nutrition Programs
including Team Nutrition, National School Lunch Program, School
Breakfast Program, etc.
- Proven record implementing farm to school initiatives
(experience leading, managing, and teaching farm to school
nutrition education, procurement, or school gardening) at the
local, state, or national level.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with university,
state, federal partners individually and on coalitions or
committees.
- Demonstrated project or program management experience,
preferably with federal grants.
- Experience and strong skills in program planning, proposal
development, personnel leadership, and budget management. Preferred
Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
- Masters Degree in nutrition, food systems, or related
field.
- Demonstrated experience in applying for and managing USDA Team
Nutrition or Farm to School grants. The Successful Candidate Will
- Demonstrate strong leadership skills and experience in
successful program management, specifically projects funded by
federal grants.
- Demonstrate experience in budget management, fiscal oversight,
and sub-contract management.
- Demonstrate experience in effective personnel management
including hiring, training, supporting, and supervising staff.
- Demonstrate success in submitting and being awarded federal
and/or state grants.
- Demonstrate proficiency in effective communication strategies,
both oral and written.
- Demonstrate experience in creating program materials,
publications, and educational messages in a variety of formats
including creating web-based content, social media, and print
materials.
- Demonstrate experience using computer and software systems such
as Microsoft Office Suite, calendar apps, social media platforms,
spreadsheets, database systems, email, basic graphic design, and
virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and
Webex.
- Demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective
working relations with a diverse group of audiences ( MTN staff,
school staff, State Agency staff, program partners, USDA , public,
etc.).
- Be able to travel to meet with grant sponsors, project
partners, school districts, and organizations, as needed per grant
requirements or workplan projects.
- Possess ability to organize and prioritize large volumes of
work with a high degree of accuracy, timeliness, and
confidentiality, while adapting to changing priorities and
maintaining a positive and professional approach.
- Take initiative to improve program efficiency, problem solve,
and be able to be flexible with meeting the training needs of
program participants and target audiences.
- Demonstrate proficiency in design, implementation, and delivery
of effective training programs virtually and in-person to local and
statewide audiences.
- Demonstrate proficiency in accurately collecting, managing,
analyzing, and reporting data associated with program
evaluation.
- Utilize new and current technologies and education strategies
for effective communication and delivery of trainings.
- Ensure compliance with all university, agency, department, and
sponsor reporting requirements. Position Special
